Company History
K&H Construction was started by Kevin Kuhnert and two other guys in 1978. Kevin was a second-generation home builder who also ran a small excavating company.
Their hope was to start a residential construction company that would serve the region surrounding the Perry County, Illinois area where they lived. Those first years they built their reputation for hard work and good quality building new homes, additions, roofing, and remodeling.
In the mid 1980s, Todd Heape would begin working as an employee for K&H and quickly show he had what it would take to be a partner in the company. In 1986, he bought into the company and became part owner as well, making K&H a company of four owners with only one full time employee and a few part time employees. During this time, they were beginning to make a name for themselves as the premier housing contractors in the area.
Still a small company at the time, they were building 4-5 houses a year along with a few additions and remodels.
Over the next few years, Kevin and Todd’s other two co-owners would leave the company for other ventures, but the company was hiring more employees and continuing to grow. Also, during this period of time Kevin would sell his excavating company to focus solely on the building of homes.
Up until 2000, the few employees of the company had basically worked together all as one crew to build the house from the ground up. But around this time, the owners of the company established several smaller crews that would become specialized to do the different phases of the construction process and they would rotate through the homes one after the other, each crew doing what they specifically had the tools and skills to do well and do efficiently.
In 2001, Kevin’s stepson, Jeff Wagner, who had worked as a part time employee for K&H during summers and breaks in school, moved back to the area and began working fulltime for the company. Soon after that, Jeff began learning computer aided drafting software and established what would become the design service to help the company’s homeowners by drawing up plans for the house exactly how they wanted it to be built.
In 2010, Jeff bought into a third ownership of the company becoming a full partner alongside Kevin and Todd. By this time the company had continued to grow and were now building approximately 15-18 homes a year ranging in scope from small and simple budget friendly homes to large and intricate homes that would really make a statement.
Currently, as Kevin and Todd get closer to retirement from a career of building top quality homes that have served so many people and families well over the years, K&H Construction is working to develop new leadership and top-notch employees who will continue the tradition of building structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing homes that the company has come to be known for.
It is this reputation of being the top home builders in the region, whose fingerprints can be seen all throughout the area in the homes they have labored to build, that will carry K&H Construction, Inc into the future building top quality homes for the next generation of homeowners.
